Is my loved one in a harmful relationship?

Recognizing that a loved one may be in an abusive relationship can be difficult and heart-wrenching. Abuse isn’t always physical; it can include emotional manipulation, control, isolation, or intimidation. You might notice changes in their behavior, such as withdrawing from friends and family, making excuses for their partner’s actions, or showing signs of fear or anxiety when discussing their relationship.

While it’s natural to feel unsure about how to approach the situation, understanding and recognizing these patterns is the first step in supporting them and helping them find the resources they need to break free.

How Can I Help?

The most helpful thing you can do for a loved one in an abusive situation is to offer unwavering support and never give up on them.

It’s important to listen without judgment, validate their feelings, and remind them that they are not alone. Leaving an abusive relationship can be incredibly difficult and may take time, so patience and consistent encouragement are key. Let them know you are there for them, no matter how many times they struggle or return to the relationship. Your steady presence and belief in their strength can make all the difference, giving them the confidence and reassurance they need to take steps toward safety and healing when they are ready.

We know this is sometimes easier said than done. Watching your loved one remain in a harmful situation can feel impossible. We want you to know you’re not alone.
